Can you imagine coming home and telling your husband of 37 years that you've lost your life savings? That all of the money you insisted the two of you invest with that nice Bernie Madoff is gone? And oh, by the way, you had an affair with the slickster?"Sweetheart, you've got to believe me," you desperately plead. "I totally trusted this guy. I slept with him for Pete's sake. I never dreamed he'd screw me like this. But don't worry, honey. I've got a plan to get every penny back."
Similar words were presumably uttered by one Sheryl Weinstein. Due to their investments with Bernie Madoff, she and her husband Ronald were forced to sell their apartment in Manhattan. They basically lost everything.
At his sentencing hearing, Ms. Weinstein recalled the day she first met Mr. Madoff. “I now view that day as perhaps the unluckiest day of my life because of the many events set into motion that would eventually have the most profound and devastating effect on me, my husband, my child, my parents, my in-laws and all of those who depended on us."Well
Talk about a double screw-jobber. Madoff was screwing people left and right and screwing her blind, too -- literally and . . . well, literally.
Urging the judge to hand down a heavy sentence, Ms. Weinstein told the court that Madoff "is a beast that has stolen for his own needs the livelihoods, savings, lives, hopes and dreams and futures of others. He has fed upon us to satisfy his own needs. No matter how much he takes and from whom he takes, he is never satisfied. He is an equal opportunity destroyer.”
Of course at the time, it was not publicly known that Madoff had "known" Ms. Weinstein in the biblical sense, that she had once willingly "satisfied" old Bernie's "needs."
And knock me over with a feather, Ms. Weinstein has written a tell-all book about her sordid and, let's hope for her sake, torid affair. Amazon is already accepting advance orders. The book is due to be released on August 25th.
Bernie's lawyer, Ira Sorkin, is taking it all in stride. But then, he's not the one in jail. “She’s entitled to her free speech, I suppose,” said Mr. Sorkin. “Why one would go public with something like that, I don’t know. She’s entitled to say anything that might be deemed derogatory about herself.”I guess old Ira doesn't watch much reality TV.
Ruth Madoff had no comment. But given the fact she has to tell the bankruptcy trustee every time she spends more than $100.00 on herself, this is hardly surprising. As for Ms. Weinstein's husband, Ron, who once sized Bernie up as "unassuming, a very nice guy"? Err, Ron now feels he was "a very poor judge of character," leaving us all to wonder just whose character he is referring to.
Ironically, this same Ronald Weinstein once passionately declared, "“When inmates have served their sentences, if they are trained in laundry jobs, then our industry should make an effort to hire and assist them in their transition as they join us in the workplace.”Alrighty then.

What a saga! I*m sure the media are lapping it all up.. As for Sylvia, I'm sure her squeezed assets will once again expand after the sales of her book.
I can't disagree with you, Lady Fi. Hell hath no fury . . . as we've all been told "they" say.
And it seems Mrs. Weinstein will be sparing no one in her singular rampage.
I've lost my life savings many times over, lol!
Not really, but that's true for most people!
I suppose she has to write a book, now, to support her family.
The really sad part is that people will undoubtedly buy it, and she will undoubtedly make a fortune.
NO wonder it's so damn hard to get REAL writing published.
I thought the same thing when I read the link about the book coming out--that it is a way to make some money. And who would buy it if it didn't include some hank-panky? I'm trying to imagine the conversation and decisions between Sylvia and her husband in putting it all out there. Well, they say couples are staying together more these days in lieu of a divorce because of the cost... Or heck, maybe he had about 5 affairs compared to her one.
Oh, I meant to add that your pictures on this post are a hoot.
I'm so relieved this post isn't about how you spent too much on your vacation. I may be a little paranoid, because the credit card statements from my trip are starting to roll in.
It seems people start singing a different tune when they've been impacted on a personal level by a criminal.... I wonder if he is a Philadelphia Eagle's fan? And seriously, someone is the president of a group called "Laundry Today?"
Many years ago I was talking to a woman at a charity function and I don't remember ALL of the conversation but I will always remember her saying: MY HUSBAND IS A SAINT.
Now, everyone knew he was the BIGGEST A **** in the world but quite wealthy he lost the money and two months later he lost the wife~~guess you can not be a poor saint or it does not work for her
Well, it sure does sound like a juicy, sordid tale. I see a Lifetime movie in their future.
If I lost all our family's money with my own bad behavior I'd probably write a book too to try to earn some of it back. . . looks like people are planning to buy it. Not me, but someone.
Nearly as common as rain. American formula:
1) Celebrity gained
2) Celebrity lost
3) Write tell-all book with promise of sexual details
4) Celebrity re-gained
*yawn*
Hmmm...so this woman lost the family's savings by trusting Madoff. Well, she's not the only one who fell for it, so probably forgivable. But woman also has affair with Madoff, says meeting him was "unlucky," as though this was another way in which she was victimized. Sorry, lady...THAT I am not buying! (No pun intended, as I also do not plan on buying her tell-all book.)
So maybe she's doing it to make money. I don't know how bad things are financially for this family. But what about her children? If I was moronic enough to have an affair, I wouldn't want the details advertised for my children/their friends to know. If you have no dignity for yourself, at least maintain some for your children's sake.
And, The Mother, you're right...real writing doesn't sell. Too many people prefer this type of entertainment. I guess there's not enough of "us" to be worthy of generating quality books/articles/etc. Thank goodness for blogs...at least we can find some decent work on the internet.
I guess the book is her attempt to make some money after she had lost it all...
I'm still waiting for a Burkina Fasoan "associate" of Bernie Madoff's -- widda name like that, how can one NOT expect to get screwed -- to contact me with an "offer to give me the business" involving millions/billions that Bernie squirreled away in the Bank of Africa, Burkina Faso.
And if it's a she named "Sheryl", it orta be goooood.
Wow the drama never ends... Is this what rich people do with their lives? They are just like the trailer-park trash that is on Jerry Springer, except they are in name-brand labels and write tell all books from their fancy apartments. Amazing! I probably would tune in to see Ruth Madoff confront Sylvia on TV and if they could somehow have Bernie come out and sit awkwardly between them that would be lovely.
Good idea to write a post on this. I read about it in the paper yesterday. Bernard's wife should cash in on the story too with her own book!!!
Money money everywhere!!! I saw more cashing in on Michael Jackson's death this morning - the newest is a clothing line that supposedly Michael created before his death. YEAH RIGHT!!
Wait. You mean to tell me Bernie Madoff cheated on his wife? And he seemed like such a nice guy.
Ew gross, her book looks foul! I love your posts by the way - I just hate these stupid people that got the media's attention. It's so not right!
I don't know who Sylvia is . . . but I must admit I harbor a tiny bit of sympathy towards Ruthie Madoff. Until something is reported that proves otherwise, I will continue to believe she had not a clue.
As for Sheryl Weinstein, may she make bucket loads to atone for her sins, to make her family (and her charity, let's not forget) whole.
But so many of you keep referring to a "Sylvia." Who, pray tell, is Sylvia? Fill me in, gentle readers, and I'll include her in my next Bernie-related post.
Right now, I've only got the scoop -- and it's partial scoop at that -- on Ruth Madoff and Sheryl Weinstein. As for Sylvia? Nada.
Ooops, I guess it is an alliteration thing about name Sheryl turning into Sylvia. Because it is usually spelled Cheryl. Sheryl probably got that a lot. Like I get Melissa.
